Our 3 Picks on Sight of Art
In this magical atmosphere, the Gallery was filled with magnificent artworks: The framed art pieces on top of the fireplace struck me the most; a layered image on paper by artist Paulo Onditi whose visual language is distinguished by a remarkable blend between graphic, abstract elements with imagery drawn from nature, which simultaneously encompasses personal experiences and issues of a universal nature.
Dotted across and up this magnificent space is the famous YO YO MA Bach Project, a product of collaboration between artists and culture makers across the globe, as they aspire to demonstrate culture’s power to create positive change, inspire new relationships, connect partners across locations, and ask us all to keep culture at the centre of our efforts to build a shared future. This exhibition explored and celebrated all the ways that culture makes us stronger as individuals, communities, society, and as a planet.
Wini Awuondo’s two aclyric hues on skateboard characteristic style are recognizable for her organic palette and roots in hardboard art. In this exhibition, she deconstructs organic forms in order to explore colour fields in her work and represents feminine energy in her expressive doodles, outlines and sensually themed drawings. The artist’s colourful presentation in her creations present at the Afrikana House indicates the passage of time and the ephemerality of art and structures seen throughout the space.
The space presents more collective and solo projects of paintings, sculptures, photography art and installations by leading and emerging local and international artists.
Our Impression on Space
Nestled into a dense canopy of nature an architectural masterpiece, 3 floored flat roof mansion composed of 4 bedrooms, numerous event spaces, two work rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, an honesty bar, a living room and a beautifully landscaped garden formed out of nature and brackets a car park limited to approximately 4 vehicles. Each room is orientated to maximise interior aesthetics and views across the landscape, with controlled light entering the house and the use of a canopy and topography to provide privacy.
Inside the house is a commitment to the best of local design, a philosophy of lean luxury all made in Kenya: if you like to sit then you can experience different classes of comfort in all the unique handcrafted and personalized furniture clustered across the main living room and veranda to meet all your need and style. At the same time, the house also enhances the visitor experience by establishing continuous pathways through its different rooms and floors with a mix of art, architecture and indoor plants.
From one person who loves sight; this is the latest in a series of major projects across Kenya that have transformed how we view gathering and exhibition spaces.
