Big raises, big wins, just adventures? Mmmmmh, there are a couple of very good reasons you might find yourself at the Wine Box; this is the number one online craze in Kenya right now, and you’ve probably bookmarked it on Instagram or Tiktok (like us) waiting for an excuse to visit it. Books have always been our go-to excuse for doing anything, and this factored right in. We happen to be a community of bookworms who love some wine and bubbly so for us, this was a perfect excuse to make our way to the Wine Box in Karen. This was after making a reservation three weeks in advance but cha muhimu ni: was the trip deserving of the hype? Is it actually a secret treasure?
I’d say it doesn’t matter if you’re a self-proclaimed seasoned wine nerd in your group or someone who simply enjoys a chilled glass of wine on an evening and might want to sip one while watching the sun set in a blaze of orange over…..penye unaishi bro. I can’t think of another establishment in Nairobi that does wine better than the Wine Box (this is coming from our group’s wine nerd). Not only do they display it beautifully, but they also have a lot to show- Take it from me, si ni mimi nakushow!
The ambience of wine tasting in this setting is palpably charged with energy and enthusiasm. The shelves are well-organized and filled with wines from regions you probably have not heard of. The collection spans the West to the East and contains wines of all vintages (“nipee ya 2022 hiyo ndio tamu”-wrong). The collection includes cinsault, clairette, and cabernet franc in addition to cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and pinotage, making it a very stunning assortment.
So where do you even start? You could consider taking a wine cellar tour. Don’t forget to snap a few photos for your monthly IG dumps. Since the sommeliers are renowned for their patience with guests, take a deeper look and ask lots of questions. Then, proceed to the fine dining area of the cellar to get recommendations on the best wines to begin and end your evening. Since you’re a considerate gift-giver (we hope), you can also make a note of several affordable wines to get for your “four-cousin” friend while you’re there.
A visit to this inspiring place, run by quite exceptional people, is about far more than just wine but experience, the ideal way to fully enjoy this experience is to book a table(easily done online) in Cave-A-Manger a restaurant inside the cellar that’s open on Tuesday to Sunday from noon till 11 pm, while there order a glass to drink as you eat while enjoying the ambience. For us, we started our night with a bottle of Charles & Charles Rosé, a generous and energetic wine palate with flavours of citrus and tangy cherry. Paired with it, our table of diverse individuals went with Crispy Chicken Wings, Potato Wedges, Green Risotto and Calamari Carbonara. Three wines down we closed our evening with Red California Roots, an acquired taste and a revelation of Americans being able to actually make good wine.
As more locals wandered in for a bite to eat or a drink, the service was consistently superb and charmingly French, and the atmosphere was laid-back and joyful. All of the food we had was of extremely high quality. The food at Cave A Manger has rightly remained popular for years because it is tasty, uncomplicated, and bursting with enticing flavours. My only issue about Cave A Manger is that it is not located closer to my house or Nairobi CBD in the least.
For someone who appreciates cuisine, it checks a lot of boxes, from the affordable wine list to the inviting setting to the great meal.
Cost per head: approx 1500 to 3000 for 3 courses and a shared bottle of wine
Nearest: Ngong Road, Karen
